Gibson 1955 NAMM Show Commemorative Edition Les Paul Samoa Beige
Celebrating the 70th anniversary of the five custom color Gibson Les Pauls displayed at the 1955 NAMM Show
The National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) is a not-for-profit global trade association dedicated to the music products industry. Their annual trade shows, dating back to 1902 in Baltimore, MD, are pivotal events where companies like Gibson unveil new models to dealers, the press, and visitors. Occasionally, Gibson also showcases unique models made specifically for the NAMM Show. At the 1955 NAMM Show in Chicago, IL, Gibson displayed five distinctive Les Paul™ models, each finished in custom metallic nitrocellulose lacquer car finishes: Samoa Beige, Copper Iridescent, Nugget Gold, Platinum, and Viceroy Brown. These guitars featured no-wire ABR-1 Tune-O-Matic™ bridges and Stop Bar tailpieces, first introduced on the Gibson Super 400 in 1953 and appearing on a standard Les Paul model for the first time with these guitars. Made in extremely limited numbers, only a few of these iconic Les Pauls are known to exist today.
In honor of this milestone, Gibson Custom introduces the 1955 NAMM Show Commemorative Edition Les Paul. This special run is limited to just 70 guitars in each of the five custom colors, with the metallic finishes expertly recreated for the first time. These guitars are built to historically accurate 1955 specifications, including a lightweight one-piece mahogany body, a hide glue-fitted two-piece plain maple cap, and color-matched Speed knobs modeled after the originals. The one-piece mahogany neck features a long neck tenon, a 1950s Chunky D-Shape profile, and an Indian rosewood fretboard with 22 historic narrow/tall frets, a 12” radius, and aged cellulose nitrate trapezoid inlays. The headstock boasts a period-correct “low logo” holly veneer, a nylon nut, and single-line, single-ring Kluson® tuners, along with a historically accurate 1955 serial number on the back.
The pickups are a pair of cream-covered Custom Shop P-90 Soapbars, hand-wired to 500k CTS® potentiometers and paper-in-oil capacitors. Each of the 350 guitars in this limited edition (70 per color) features Light Aging by the Murphy Lab, giving them the authentic character and feel of an original Gibson Golden Era instrument. Paired with lightly aged hardware, the Murphy Lab Light Aged finish treatment simulates decades of light play wear. To complete the vintage experience, every guitar includes a brown/pink Lifton™ five-latch case.
