A Fender Custom Shop instrument is extraordinary. You know it when you play one—it's definitely more than the sum of its parts. It's filled with intangible, electrifying elements that add a new dimension to your playing experience. It's as if the instrument itself is imbued with history, alive with the spirit of the place where it was built and the devotion of those who crafted it.
The Custom Shop is home to Fender's most skilled and talented builders. It's a bustling, noisy and creatively volcanic place that re-earns its nickname—the Dream Factory—every day. Custom Shop builders are completely dedicated to their art—part craftsman, part artist, part music fan and, more often than not, part mad scientist. They're the best at what they do, and they pour all of their passion, hard-earned knowledge and skill into every instrument they build. It's no ordinary place, and the creations that come from it are no ordinary instruments. Welcome to the Fender Custom Shop.
For players who wish to create a completely custom instrument—anything from a humbucking pickup-equipped banjo to a custom-engraved aluminum-bodied Strat®—we offer Masterbuilt, a singular experience working one-on-one with one of our Master Builders. Custom-Built is for those who prefer to start with one of our time-honored models and personalize the specifications to meet your specific needs. Use this guide to design your very own Masterbuilt or Custom-Built Fender guitar and make your dreams come true.
Like a Vintage Strat, But Better
The Fender Custom Shop '60s Stratocaster NOS is a one-of-a-kind instrument that is based on feedback we've received from countless guitarists. True to its name, this Strat is crafted to the exacting specs that make vintage Fenders from the 1960s so desirable. The nitrocellulose finish, '60s neck profile, and clear-as-a-bell tone are all accounted for. The Fender Custom Shop then took the '60s Stratocaster NOS a step further by loading it with a set of hand-wound, Dual-Magnet single-coil pickups that nail the vintage vibe while evening out the frequency response and string-to-string clarity.
Classic Strat design with Heavy Relic finish
The Fender Custom Shop '60s Stratocaster NOS is a classic Strat all the way through. The alder body even sports a nitro finish that looks like it came right off of the showroom floor in 1965. The custom neck is choice quartersawn maple that is both extremely stable, and vintage correct. It is then carved to Fender's '66 Oval C profile for a feel that fills your hand while allowing plenty of high-performance playing.
Modern feel
Along the guitar's fingerboard, you'll notice that the Fender Custom Shop took full advantage of the tweaks modern players love. The neck is a flatter 9.5" radius, which has been a favorite around Sweetwater for years for its balance of comfort and playability. And Fender chose extra jumbo 6100 fretwire, which is advantageous for players who really like to get under the string for wide bends and vibrato.
Dual-Magnet single-coil pickups
Where the Fender Custom Shop really shook things up is with their Dual-Magnet single-coil pickups. Each of the pickups boasts alnico II magnets along the treble side alnico 5 on the bass side. This pairing proves to elicit the most punchy and tight bass response while sweetening the top end. Go ahead, select the bridge pickup and play up high. You'll love how these pickups make each note bloom with a singing tone that is never shrill or thin. But don't worry, the 1960s Stratocaster NOS still maintains its distinctly 1960s sound.
