1960s Epiphone by Gibson Sheraton – Natural Finish
The 1960s Epiphone Sheraton in Natural finish, made during the golden era of Gibson’s stewardship over Epiphone, is a rare and coveted semi-hollow electric guitar that embodies top-tier craftsmanship, ornate aesthetics, and refined tonal performance. Built in the Kalamazoo, Michigan factory alongside Gibson’s ES models, this Sheraton represents one of the most luxurious guitars in the Epiphone lineup of the era.
Overview
The Sheraton was introduced in the late 1950s as Epiphone’s response to the Gibson ES-335, with premium appointments, multi-ply binding, and distinctive inlays setting it apart. A true player’s guitar with collector appeal, the Sheraton’s semi-hollow maple body, set mahogany neck, and mini-humbuckers (or New York pickups on early versions) offer articulate tones suited for jazz, blues, and classic rock.
Key Features
-
Body: Laminated maple top, back, and sides with a center block for feedback resistance and sustain
-
Neck: 5-piece mahogany/walnut laminated neck with a bound ebony fretboard
-
Inlays: Abalone and mother-of-pearl "Tree of Life" or block/triangle inlays (depending on year)
-

-
Finish: Natural nitrocellulose lacquer, gracefully aged with golden patina
-
Hardware: Gold-plated components, Frequensator tailpiece (or stopbar on some later examples), and original Kluson tuners
-
Scale Length: 24.75”
-

Tone and Playability
This Sheraton delivers a sweet blend of resonance and clarity thanks to its semi-hollow construction and quality tonewoods. The mini-humbuckers provide a tighter low end and more pronounced midrange compared to full-sized humbuckers, making it a versatile option for jazz players, blues stylists, and early rock tones.
